Eton Summer School
Since 2007 Hounslow schools have successfully applied for the Eton College Universities Summer School through the Spark! team. The 2013 course saw 18 students from Hounslow schools involved.
“The students found the Eton College Universities Summer School an intellectually inspiring experience, which has further fuelled their desire to pursue their chosen subjects at top universities.”
Catherine Crouch, Head of Sixth Form, St Mark’s Catholic School
“The Eton College Universities Summer School has developed an excellent working relationship with Hounslow schools [which] have provided outstanding students for this highly selective and academically intense course.
“The Hounslow schools now provide more students than any other LEA and the immense benefit is felt by both the students and Eton College.”
Andy Halksworth, Director, Eton College Universities Summer School and 2010 winner of the Jubilee Cup awarded by Spark! and Hounslow Chamber
From Hounslow via Eton to Cambridge
Safian Younas, a former student at The Heathland School and one of the first Hounslow students to attend the Eton Universities Summer School in 2007, is now completing a medical degree at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge:
“Eton was an experience which taught many things…confidence, independence of thought and time management. Most importantly though, it made you realise that you were able to compete with the best, and that things which seemed out of reach were not so far away at all.
“Also, it was a unique taster of what university life was like and left me with a desire to pursue it. Indeed the Eton Summer School was one of the main factors which provided me with the self belief to apply to the University of Cambridge, something that I otherwise would have deemed quite alien and somewhat unachievable.”
Who should apply?
The key requirements for the course are that students should be high achievers and be aspiring for admission to British universities of the calibre of Oxford or Cambridge.
The aim of the course is to provide an intensive and exciting programme to enrich the students’ intellectual experience and to give them the opportunity to exchange ideas with those with similar interests from other schools, including Eton. The course supplements the normal school curriculum and attempts to avoid topics covered during the A-level teaching course.
How the Spark! team helps

What students say about the course…
“ ‘Once in a lifetime’ is an over-used phrase. Suffice to say it really was once in a lifetime. A really great experience. In the college library I saw a first edition Shakespeare folio: an almost surreal yet fascinating opportunity.”
Josh Woolas, Lampton School
“A unique opportunity that will stay with me for life”
Jad Kesserwani, Gunnersbury Catholic School
“…the staff and teaching were absolutely phenomenal and the time I spent there has done wonders for my confidence and work ethic. I now know where my strengths lie and am confident enough to engage in class discussions…”
Victoria Hackman, St Mark’s Catholic School
“Eton gave me an opportunity to come out of my shell, both academically and socially…[it] helped me to a greater understanding of the A-level curriculum and gave me the determination to try and pursue my goal of entering higher education.”
Jamie Windmill, St Mark’s Catholic School
